The R&D of Search Ads aims to build an online advertising ecosystem of users, advertisers, and the search engine.
Bing Search Ads Understanding team is chartered to deliver world class algorithm using web scale data. Our mission is to drive user satisfaction, advertiser ROI and Bing revenue. A core challenge is to match advertisers' "Ad display" and users' "query" by build an intelligent system to really understand the users need. This is a very hard problem that demands the most advanced AI models and sophisticated engineering systems. We are seeking an Applied Scientist II to join our Copilot Ads team, advancing recall algorithms and intent understanding capabilities. You'll design, develop, and optimize machine learning models and algorithms for Copilot Ads—at the intersection of natural language understanding, information retrieval, and advertising technology to deliver relevant, personalized ad experiences.

Starting January 26, 2026, Microsoft AI (MAI) employees who live within a 50- mile commute of a designated Microsoft office in the U.S. or 25-mile commute of a non-U.S., country-specific location are expected to work from the office at least four days per week. Responsibilities
- Design and optimize recall algorithms for ad retrieval in conversational AI contexts, focusing on relevance, diversity, and commercial intent alignment
- Develop intent understanding models including intent classification, detection, and explaination
- Train, evaluate, and iterate on machine learning models for production-quality performance using A/B testing, offline evaluation, and quality metrics
- Implement model distillation and optimization techniques to balance quality, latency, and capacity requirements
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions and contribute to measurement frameworks
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
- OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field
- OR equivalent experience.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's or Ph.D. in Computer Science or Machine Learning.
- Experience with Large Language Models, transformer architectures, and model distillation techniques.
- Background in advertising, search, or recommendation systems.
- Knowledge of intent classification, query understanding, and conversational AI.
- Familiarity with A/B testing, experimentation frameworks, and evaluation methodologies.
- Publications or contributions to top-tier conferences (NeurIPS, ICML, KDD, SIGIR)
- Experience with Azure ML, PyTorch, TensorFlow, or similar ML frameworks
- 3+ years of experience in algorithm development, machine learning, or applied AI.
- Solid programming skills in Python, C++, or similar languages.
- Deep understanding of machine learning fundamentals, deep learning, NLP, and information retrieval.
- Experience with large-scale data processing and distributed computing frameworks.
- Solid analytical and problem-solving skills.
