Principal Product Designer
Microsoft
Responsibilities
- Lead end-to-end design for AI-powered experiences across platforms and form factors, partnering closely with Product and Engineering.
- Lead with curiosity: explore emerging AI tools and techniques by default (prompting, rapid prototyping, creative experimentation) and bring learnings back to the team.
- Design like a maker: build prototypes, test ideas, and iterate quickly to uncover what’s possible (including hands-on work with prompts, model behavior, and system constraints).
- Define AI experience quality expectations and frameworks for complex, multi-turn scenarios (e.g., context handling, uncertainty, graceful fallbacks), and influence decisions through strong storytelling
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 6+ years experience working in product or service design
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Design, Product Design, Human Computer Interaction, User Experience, Interaction Design, or related field AND 8+ years experience working in product or service design
- OR equivalent experience (e.g., demonstrated experience working in product or service design or using design thinking to solve problems).
- Excellent communication and storytelling skills, including the ability to influence cross-functional partners and stakeholders.
- Experience shipping products or services through an end-to-end design process.
- Strong interaction design, systems thinking, and scenario design skills (including multi-turn and AI-assisted experiences).
- Ability to translate complex problems into clear UX frameworks, flows, and UI specifications.
- Experience creating information architecture, wireframes, and prototypes; comfort iterating quickly to test and validate behavior (not just UI).
- AI-forward mindset: fluency with prompting and context building; working knowledge of RAG systems and agent patterns; ability to evaluate AI system behavior and define quality for multi-turn scenarios.
- Ability to manage time, prioritize effectively, and deliver under deadlines.
- Portfolio demonstrating end-to-end product design work is required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proven experience designing AI/LLM-powered experiences, including shaping model/agent behavior beyond UI (prompting, context engineering, RAG).
- Experience with agents, tool integration and orchestration, and/or evaluation frameworks (quality rubrics, red teaming, conversation review) is a strong plus.
- Proficiency in Figma and AI prototyping tools; experience with vibe coding or similar creative prototyping approaches is a plus.
- Experience designing for ambiguity in AI systems (uncertainty handling, partial answers, grounding, and graceful fallbacks).
- Strong builder mindset and comfort operating in fast-moving, evolving AI product spaces.
- Portfolio includes AI behavior work (model shaping exercises, prompt/context design), and prototypes that demonstrate orchestration, tool use, or agent behavior beyond UI.
