The 1ES (One Engineering System) team is responsible for enabling the world's best engineering teams with world-class tools and systems that help them ship products their customers love. 1ES develops and operates a set of engineering tools and services including build, verification services, code review tools, data analysis, and machine learning services - all working towards a unified engineering system for internal Microsoft needs. Distributed build, static analysis, test and release are at the center of Microsoft 1ES and are helping major groups within the company deliver features faster and with better quality. Our services are used by tens of thousands of developers, and we build, analyze, test and release millions of projects daily in a distributed service running at scale in multiple data centers across the world.
As a Principal Software Engineering Manager, you will define the future of engineering systems and developer productivity. You will lead a team that builds high-scale distributed services for developer productivity and build and utilize AI agents and extensions to significantly improve developer experience of development workflows.

Responsibilities
- Owns system architecture efforts for complex products, writes design documents, and explores new technologies for integration.
- Establishes best practices for testing strategies and security validation.
- Guides dependency identification and creates relationships between systems for security, compliance, and performance.
- Leads teams in producing maintainable code, resolving development blockers, and identifying best practices.
- Develops debugging methodologies and tracks incident retrospectives. Leads code reviews and ensures adherence to standards.
- Directs project planning for resource management and ensures security compliance across products.
- Guides wide-scale experimentation, safe deployment practices, and live site maintenance.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's Degree in Computer Science, Design or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 6+ years people management experience.
- Experience designing and operating large-scale engineering systems, with exposure to end-to-end SDLC in complex environments.
- Experience with DevOps products and workflows, including tools such as Azure DevOps, GitHub, and GitLab, with a proven track record of building or supporting engineering systems
- Significant people management experience, especially who have led teams through change, ambiguity, or stabilization scenarios.

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
