The Azure Core team is responsible for building the foundational components that support Microsoft Azure, one of the largest cloud platforms in the world. This work involves contributing to state‑of‑the‑art distributed services that form the base on which the entire cloud operates. The team focuses on core capabilities that ensure Azure remains robust, scalable, and capable of supporting a wide range of products and services.

As a Software Engineer in Azure Core, the role centers on developing and maintaining services that must remain continuously available. These services enable Azure to deliver products that operate around the clock. The position provides the opportunity to deepen knowledge of how large‑scale cloud systems are built, develop expertise in distributed systems, and understand the operation of a hyperscale cloud environment.

Responsibilities
  • Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a feature.
  • Supports identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product feature with oversight.
  • With guidance, learns to create and implement code for a product, service, or feature reusing code as applicable.
  • Assists and learns about breaking down work items into tasks and provides estimation.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) in monitoring system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions for simple problems, and recommends actions to restore system/product/service by following the playbook.
  • Reviews current developments and proactively seeks new knowledge that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s/Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical discipline OR equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages like, but not limited to, C++, C#, C, Java, Python, Rust.
  • Understanding of distributed systems and cloud architecture fundamentals.
  • Strong problem-solving and debugging skills in production environments.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related technical AND technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience
  • Software industry experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
