Join Microsoft in this amazing opportunity as a Senior Sourcing Engineer driving end‑to‑end sourcing strategies across complex component technologies that may include mechanical systems, battery technologies, camera modules, and other electro‑mechanical components. This role enables impact through supplier leadership, category strategy ownership, and cross‑functional partnership from concept through production.
The Microsoft Devices Operations (MDO) group seeks sourcing engineers with experience managing diverse advanced component categories. The successful candidate will lead category strategy and negotiations, guide supplier relationships, and curate a mature supply base that delivers competitive cost, quality, resilience, and technology outcomes across the Devices hardware product lines.
We are looking for a candidate with a proven track record of success in dynamic and demanding environments. The ideal individual will demonstrate an ability to resolve challenges through logical analysis, evaluating alternatives, adaptability, strategic planning, and effective communication—essential for guiding cross-functional teams through sourcing activities. Both quantitative and qualitative assessment skills are required to maximize available resources.

Responsibilities
- Develop and execute market‑leading sourcing strategies across assigned categories, which may include mechanical components, battery systems, camera modules, optical assemblies, sensors, interconnects, or other complex technologies.
- Serve as business owner for assigned categories, leading supplier relationship management, performance improvement, and capability development.
- Orchestrate sourcing execution through the CM Partners Sourcing teams, ensuring they deliver against category strategies, cost models, supplier performance expectations, and program milestones. Provide direction, clarify priorities, unblock gaps, and hold Tier1 partners accountable to Microsoft standards and business outcomes.
- Build and maintain predictable and competitive cost models, including should‑cost analysis and total cost of ownership (TCO) modeling across diverse technologies.
- Secure components and/or services in the assigned category, which will provide competitive advantage in both technology and cost for Microsoft.
- Drive change management to continuously improve efficiency and performance via repeatable processes, people growth, and elimination of work duplication.
Partner closely with Engineering, Quality, Operations and CM Sourcing teams to ensure alignment on category roadmaps, supplier selection, readiness, and execution. Drive transparency and rhythm‑of‑business expectations to ensure the CM teams manage day‑to‑day sourcing operations while you guide strategic direction.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 3+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles
- OR Bachelor's degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 4+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles
- OR equivalent experience.
- Deep industry knowledge relevant for Mechanical and/or Electro-Mechanical components in the consumer electronics industry
- Preferred materials and technologies include:
- Mechanical systems (CNC machining, stamping, molding, die casting, surface finishing)
- Battery technologies (Li-ion cells, pack integration, BMS, charging safety, thermal modeling)
- Camera modules & optical systems (lenses, AF/OIS mechanisms, sensors, ISP fundamentals)
- Electro‑mechanical assemblies (motors, actuators, hinges, haptics, interconnects)
- Connector & interconnect technologies (high‑speed I/O, power connectors, PCB and Flex assemblies, cabling)
- Preferred materials and technologies include:
- Demonstrated experience in market analysis to dissect market size, players, customers, growth, technology replacements/forecasts, pricing trends, etc., to formulate sourcing strategies.
- Experience in delivering best in class total cost of ownership (TCO), continuity of supply (COS), and in building partnerships.
Other Requirements: Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Materials Science, or related field AND 5+ years experience in procurement, supply chain, sourcing, engineering, operations, or relevant sales-related roles
- OR equivalent experience.
- Expertise in financial statement analysis to derive should-cost models and cost competitiveness/financial strengths of suppliers before RFx is conducted.
- Combination of business and technical knowledge base, particularly for assigned categories.
- Project/timeline (Consumer Electronics Integrated Project Management) adherence experiences.
- Ability to articulate points of view with executive management but execute plans when directed.
- Proficient in mastering Microsoft systems and processes, and adept at synthesizing diverse perspectives to drive effective action and execution.
- Passionate about opportunities to establish new approach to sourcing.
- Ability to communicate and think strategically to support ideology with facts.

Sourcing Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.
