Within CO&I, the Data Center Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core data center infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The Microsoft portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year data center construction and lease projects. Responsibilities
The Principal Civil/Geotechnical Engineer will serve as a Civil & Geotechnical Subject Matter Expert (SME) on data center programming, design development, design, construction administration, renovations, retrofits, master planning, site due diligence, and operations-related technical design guidance and support. This position will provide civil and geotechnical engineering technical direction and oversight for APAC-region data center designs. They will be responsible to engage with key Microsoft stakeholders, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), and external A/E consultant teams and general contractors to ensure that Microsoft’s data center civil and geotechnical design and quality standards are met.
The Principal Civil/Geotechnical Engineer will be responsible for the facilitation and delivery of Microsoft’s industry-leading data center designs including the development of innovative technology and advanced design concepts to be used as the basis for current and next generation data center designs, retrofits, and renovations. This role will provide technical direction, decision-making, and overall technical leadership for all civil and geotechnical engineering aspects of Microsoft’s data center portfolio.
Core Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with internal Microsoft and external stakeholders to provide civil and geotechnical engineering technical direction to deliver projects aligned with defined civil and structural performance criteria within scope, schedule, and budget.
- Exceptional communication, organization, and leadership skills.
- Expert level civil and geotechnical engineering design proficiency in commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on mission critical data center design.
- Must be able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament and a results-oriented collaborative manner.
- Be a competent subject matter expert for greenfield or brownfield developments, specifically:
- ability to interrogate site investigations/field data to provide a technical opinion on the site geological condition
- ability to interrogate & assess the recommendation of the AE
- ability to value add to the methodology and procedures to ground improvements
- ability to value add to the methodology and procedures for foundation design (working in conjunction with a Structural Engineer)
- has industry track record and current experience to market conditions, techniques & methodology to drive technical relevant solutions
- Must be a person of integrity, be methodical and detailed-oriented with a strong work ethic.
- Be a self-started, be inquisitive, and takes initiative to drive outcome
Qualifications
Required/Minimum Qualifications
- 20+ years technical & industry experience
- 15+ years of technical civil and geotechnical engineering experience.
- OR Bachelor's degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or related field AND 12+ years of technical civil/geotechnical engineering experience.
- OR Master's degree in Civil/Geotechnical Engineering or related field AND 10+ years of technical civil/geotechnical engineering experience.
- Professional Engineering License in Civil and/or Geotechnical Engineering is required.
- 10+ years’ experience managing geographically diverse civil/structural design teams, cross-functional design teams, and/or multi-disciplinary project teams.
- 5+ years’ experience in navigating in Revit, AutoCAD, Sketchup, Bluebeam, and BIM 360 software for design review and development of designs.
- 5+ years’ experience performing complex business case analysis to justify technical civil/structural/Geotechnical for large scale & complex projects and/or data center design approaches and decisions.
- Demonstrated some experience with data center projects desirable but not essential.

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
