Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO+I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO+I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

The Global Datacenter Engineering Electrical Engineer will fulfill a technical role for Microsoft as a global datacenter electrical subject matter expert (SME). This role will involve supporting Microsoft’s datacenter Technical Excellence program and projects globally. The successful candidate will be required to set and provide global technical direction for internal DCE electrical subject matter experts (SME) and external consultants. This role will require deep knowledge in the design and coordination of the electrical systems, associated systems and overall topology for Microsoft’s global fleet of datacenters.

Responsibilities
  • Provide consistent leadership with excellent communication, and with a high level of organization.
  • Attend scheduled Electrical SME meetings with regional teams to set direction and align priorities.
  • Maintain and manage Microsoft’s master electrical specifications, incorporating continuous improvement updates and aligning with emerging industry requirements.
  • Coordinate with other teams within the DCE organization to maintain standard design schedules for consistency across the program.
  • Develop and continually improve existing processes and procedures.
  • Work cross functionally with multiple stakeholders to deliver and continually improve Microsoft’s overall electrical design approach.
  • Work effectively with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and facilitate cross-group collaboration and stakeholder alignment.
  • Exhibit personal integrity with a methodical and detail-oriented work ethic.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years technical engineering experience OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years technical engineering experience OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to present using the MS office suite; MS word, MS excel and MS PowerPoint.
  • AutoCAD, REVIT & BIM capability.
  • SKM, ETAP power analysis software proficiency.
  • Experience managing internal customer requirements and design.
  • 5+ years’ experience designing complex electrical engineering systems in datacenters.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Electrical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and review availability and reliability calculations.
  • Detailed understanding of uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, medium- & low-voltage electrical switchgear and distribution design.
  • Detailed understanding of underground distribution design, including Neher-McGrath duct bank heat calculations.
  • Extensive experience in the review and analysis of short circuit, coordination and arc flash studies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry standards, building codes and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform equipment reviews including factory witness testing.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams of internal and external engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large datacenter environments.
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally.

Electrical Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.
