Overview

Microsoft currently has an immediate opportunity available with its Law Enforcement and National Security (LENS) team. The successful candidate will be highly organized, motivated, and comfortable working both independently and as part of a global team. Once training has been fully completed, a new Attorney may work remotely up to 20% of the time in our hybrid environment.

About the team

LENS is part of the Microsoft Global Affairs organization within Corporate, External, and Legal Affairs (CELA). As part of Microsoft Global Affairs, the LENS team is responsible for balancing public safety and global trust in Microsoft through principled advocacy and compliance with law enforcement demands for data that respect the rule of law and our customers’ privacy. LENS provides this support for Microsoft’s online services such as Outlook.com, OneDrive, Xbox Live, Teams, M365, and Azure.

Within the global LENS team, attorneys provide advice and guidance to the team responsible for responding to law enforcement demands for customer data. This job will include supporting operational decision making as well as the development and implementation of Microsoft’s efforts to promote the privacy interests of its customers while maintaining compliance with Microsoft’s legal obligations. Knowledge of local laws relating to data disclosure to law enforcement, collaboration across legal domains, and technical curiosity are keys to success.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor Degree or international equivalent degree AND 4+ years experience as a practicing attorney OR equivalent experience
  • Active license to practice law in a jurisdiction and capable of meeting admission requirements in relevant jurisdiction


Preferred Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor Degree or international equivalent degree AND 12+ years experience as a practicing attorney OR equivalent experience
  • Prior experience handling Indian law enforcement, privacy, security, or incident response requests either in the government, telecommunications, or the technology industry.
  • Prior experience with IT Act, 2000 and corresponding rules, laws pertaining to SSMIs in India, privacy laws, digital safety, data retention laws, and/or surveillance laws in India.
  • Familiarity with the technology industry, including Microsoft’s products and services.
  • Ability to motivate and lead others, including on matters where you have no direct oversight or management responsibilities over those whose assistance/participation is required.
  • Experience with public speaking and delivering legal training to government agencies.
  • Proficient in using Microsoft products and competent at finding solutions to routine technical issues.
  • Ability to understand a variety of technologies, business interests, and political and regulatory goals.
  • Experience working with cross-functional stakeholders (e.g., Operations Program Management, Attorneys and Engineering) to execute and improve fulfillment execution.

Responsibilities

  • Establish and maintain appropriate working relationship with Indian law enforcement agencies, to ensure legal requests sent to Microsoft comply with local laws and are in line with Microsoft’s global legal obligations and principles.
  • Responsible for outreach sessions with Indian law enforcement authorities to promote Microsoft’s Privacy and Data Protection principles, and educate stakeholders on Microsoft’s lawful access to data compliance program.
  • Provide technical legal and policy advice to Microsoft Corporation regarding privacy and law enforcement lawful access matters in the Indian jurisdiction, in coordination with the global LENS team.
  • Engage with LENS Operational leadership to maintain or improve India Lawful Access performance, risks, stakeholder management and regulatory/policy changes.
  • Collaborate and coordinate government and customer engagements with Microsoft’s India Subsidiary counterparts focused on Government Affairs, Law Enforcement, National Security, and Commercial Legal objectives.
  • Develop and implement plans that align India Lawful Access goals with new organizational goals, influencing others to adjust their behavior. Defines vision and strategy for change, broad and specific impact, and the flow of communication to the organization.
