Overview
On the Microsoft Defender for Office team (MDO), we are responsible for delivering a cloud-based email and message filtering service that protects customers from advanced threats (malware, phish, fraud and spam) in Microsoft’s email and Teams collaboration workloads. MDO provides investigation, threat hunting and remediation capabilities that allow security teams to efficiently identify, prioritize, investigate, and respond to threats.
Security has never been more important at Microsoft, and the Defender for Office (MDO) team operates at the forefront of our company’s investments to protect customers as they navigate an ever-changing security landscape. In the MDO team, we focus on detecting malicious activity (malware, phish, fraud and spam), responding rapidly and neutralizing the threat.
Our team is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to work in our Foundations organization. You will be responsible for helping build the next iteration of services that will support MDO into the future. This include optimizing our existing architecture for major value savings, embracing new technologies and architectures to enhance MDO's product agility and raising the security & quality bar for the product as a whole.

Qualifications
Required/minimum qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ year's experience working with high scale distributed systems.
- 2+ years of experience working with cloud technologies (Azure, AWS, GCP, etc.)
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft background and Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.
- 2+ year's experience working with high scale distributed systems.
- 1+ years of experience with working with and debugging SQL queries or procedures
Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

Responsibilities
As a Senior Software Engineer, you should be:
- comfortable working in an ambiguous and agile environment
- collaborating with peer engineers in MDO and its partner team across MSEC and Substrate to come up with durable solutions that fulfill customer needs
- Be the change agent on the team to bring in architectural standards, pave a clear iterative path to get us out of bare metal infrastructure and modernize our hosting architecture.
