Overview
We are looking for a Principal Software Engineer to join Copilot Studio’s AI Orchestration team, which is responsible for leveraging and optimizing generative AI models to perform actions, make decisions, create responses, and more within an agent. Our orchestration capabilities power millions of both conversational and autonomous agents every day as part of the Copilot Studio service, and allows agents to integrate with Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft Teams, IVR/voice products, power agents on the web, and much more. With the rapid pace of AI innovation, our team is uniquely positioned within Microsoft and the industry to analyze, experiment with, and productize new AI capabilities.
As a Principal Software Engineer, your role will be to provide technical leadership for a wide variety of AI workstreams, build features with high quality and maintainability alongside teams of other engineers, operate our AI services, and coach engineers on the team. You will work across Microsoft to help teams build agents, and you will work with customers to determine how Copilot Studio and agents fit into their AI strategies.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ year(s) experience building generative AI applications or services.
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 12+ years of industry experience in fullstack or backend development, successfully shipping services through multiple releases.
Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities
- Collaborates with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a scenario.
- Drives identification of dependencies and the development of design documents for a product, application, service, or platform.
- Creates, implements, optimizes, debugs, refactors, and reuses code to establish and improve performance and maintainability, effectiveness, and return on investment (ROI).
- Drives creation and conducting of experimentation to determine the effectiveness of changes, monitors developments for prototyping and testing products, and interprets results from experimentation.
- Leverages subject-matter expertise of product features and partners with appropriate stakeholders (e.g., project managers) to drive a workgroup's project plans, release plans, and work items.
- Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) and guides other engineers by developing and following the playbook, working on call to monitor system/product/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions, alerting stakeholders about status and initiates actions to restore system/product/service for simple and complex problems when appropriate.
- Proactively seeks new knowledge and adapts to new trends, technical solutions, and patterns that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
- Mentor and act as a role model for other engineers.
- Provide technical leadership, create clarity for projects and the organization for projects, generate team energy, and drive for project results and impact.
