We are looking for a Principal Applied Scientist who can help us further grow our products, business, and culture!
At Microsoft Word Copilot team in Microsoft Development Center Serbia (MDCS), we have been focusing on reimagining and empowering Microsoft Word Office productivity through AI-powered user experiences and services built across core Microsoft Office applications. Microsoft Copilot combines the power of large language models (LLMs) with your organizational data, having native integration with Office apps to streamline your productivity: content generation, app navigation, comprehension and more. The team is relentlessly focused on making AI and tech work for people!
Applied Science team within Office Serbia is focused on end-to-end building and deploying state-of-the-art deep learning models for various AI applications across Microsoft Office suite of products. The team works with product and research teams around the globe on designing and building various features based on Large Language Models (LLMs), agents, diffusion models, deep transformer-based networks, multi-modality fusion methods, etc. If you are passionate about applying cutting edge deep learning technology to positively impact the lives of millions of people, this is the job for you.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- BSc in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mathematics, or related disciplines or equivalent practical experience in software engineering industry.
 - Proficiency with Python and experience with one or more other programming languages including, but not limited to Type Script, JavaScript, C/C++. Effectiveness in working in significant and deep technical problem domains.
 - Strong software engineering fundamentals, including coding, software design, problem solving, and data analysis skills.
 - Passion for discovering the next generation of groundbreaking technologies in machine learning and consistent demonstration of growth mindset.
 - 2+ years of experience in Natural language processing and Generative models.
 - 3+ years’ experience designing, developing, leading and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.
 - Experience with guiding/mentoring a team of applied scientists/researchers/engineers.
 - Ability to effectively work in collaborative multiple project team environments and ship model features in fluid environments.
 
- Extensive experience of applied science work (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, NLP/LLM, research, machine learning, computer vision)
 - Extensive experience of conducting research as part of a research program (with focus on industry settings).
 - Master's Degree or Doctorate in Statistics, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field
 - Strong written and verbal English communication skills.
 
Responsibilities
- Drive intelligent experiences, projects, and open-ended problems through their entire lifecycle from idea creation through implementation, experimentation and finally to world-wide availability.
 
- Leverage Generative AI models but also build and deploy deep learning models.
 
- Demonstrate rigor in key scientific procedures in AI based development process - Data, Training, Prompt engineering and Metrics/Evaluation perspective.
 
- Work with other research teams on the adoption of the latest technologies.
 
- Measure the impact of models and work with product teams on appropriate designs of AI-powered experiences. Define methodology of evaluations applicable to wide range of features.
 
- Drive experimentation through A/B testing and offline validation to evaluate model performance and refine user-behavior predictions.
 
- Follow documentation and coding best practices, participate actively in code reviews, bug/issue triage with the feature teams, and support well informed decisions towards business goals.
 
- Foster a healthy and inclusive team environment, provide technical guidance to other applied scientists and act as mentor and technical lead.
 
- Maintain, nurture and build new relationships with international teams within Microsoft. Multiply impact cross teams and cross areas of work.
 
- Stay current in research and push the state of the art, while influencing roadmaps and product/business strategy.
