The Digital Direct Sales (DDS) team at Microsoft is a global eCommerce organization that helps consumers and very small businesses discover, learn, and buy Microsoft products. We are seeking a highly skilled and strategic Data Scientist to join our Reporting, Analytics, and Data Science (RAD) team.

As a Data Scientist in the RAD team, you’ll operate at the forefront of AI innovation—working fast to uncover meaningful applications that drive impact across the business. You’ll harness emerging technologies to solve complex problems, accelerate experimentation, and deliver scalable, intelligent solutions that shape the future of analytics at Microsoft.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field
    • OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results) or consulting experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 2+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ year(s) customer-facing, project-delivery experience, professional services, and/or consulting experience.
  • 1+ year(s) experience in Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) and/or Large Language Model (LLM) and prompt engineering
  • Experience with model fine-tuning, cloud computing platforms, and Application Programming Interface (API) development.

Data Science IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Data Preparation & Exploration: Acquire, clean, and organize datasets; query and visualize data; explore key attributes to support analysis and experiments
  • Model Development & Evaluation: Apply appropriate modeling techniques, build and refine Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)/Large Language Models (LLM), and evaluate results for statistical and business significance
  • Performance & Integration: Optimize model accuracy, scalability, and efficiency while embedding solutions into business workflows and tools
  • Research & Innovation: Stay current with industry trends, emerging AI/Machine Learning (ML) techniques, and best practices; contribute to thought leadership and experimentation
  • Customer & Business Alignment: Understand customer goals, identify growth opportunities, and manage expectations to ensure project outcomes deliver value
  • Collaboration & Technical Execution: Partner across teams, write efficient/debuggable code, and contribute domain experience to align initiatives with business strategy
