Overview

As a Motion Designer - Demo in Microsoft’s Design Studio for the Engines & Experiences (E&E) organization, you will be responsible for crafting high-quality, production-ready motion design and animation assets that bring product UI, features, and demos to life. You’ll work closely with design leads, product teams, and producers to translate complex functionality into clear, expressive, and engaging motion narratives. This role requires strong craft in animation, attention to detail, and a passion for storytelling through movement. You’ll contribute to the development of scalable motion systems and help visualize new features across platforms and devices. Experience with—or a strong desire to learn—AI-enhanced creative tools is essential, as we continue to evolve our workflows to be more agile, intelligent, and future-forward.

Job Location: The primary location for this position is Redmond, WA. Additionally, there are three other locations where this role may be based. Candidates who do not reside in one of these four areas will be relocated to Redmond.

This role is flexible in that you can work up to 50% from home.

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or Certificate in Design, Fine Arts, Human Computer Interaction, Visual Communications or related art field AND 2+ years experience in art design or a related art field working on computer games or entertainment OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in motion design, animation, or interaction design.
  • 2+ years of experience in motion design tools such as After Effects, Figma, Lottie, Principle, or similar.
  • A portfolio showcasing production-ready motion work for User Interface (UI), demos, or product storytelling.
Additional or preferred qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or Certificate in Design, Fine Arts, Human Computer Interaction, Visual Communications or related art field AND 8+ years experience art design or a related art field working on computer games or entertainment OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years experience using related software and packages (e.g., Maya, 3DS Max, Photoshop/Adobe suite, Mental Ray, Substance Designer/Painter/Zbrush, SideFX Houdini, After Effects, Unity, Softimage). experience shipping 2+ multiple projects or products end to end.
  • 4+ years experience working in product-focused environments or with design systems.
  • 2+ years experience with AI tools for animation, prototyping, or asset generation—or a strong desire to learn and apply them.
  • 4+ years experience working collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrixed organization.
Art IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.
