Overview

As a Motion Designer in Microsoft’s Design Studio for the Engines & Experiences (E&E) organization, you will contribute to the development of expressive, high-quality motion design that elevates brand storytelling across campaigns, social platforms, and experiential touchpoints. You’ll work closely with the Creative Director and Account Creative Directors (ACD) to bring ideas to life through animation, transitions, and visual rhythm that reflect Microsoft’s brand identity and resonate with global audiences. This role requires strong creative instincts, attention to detail, and a passion for storytelling through movement. You’ll be responsible for producing polished motion assets that support product launches, brand campaigns, and social content. You’ll also collaborate with designers, writers, and producers to ensure motion enhances clarity, emotion, and engagement.

Job Location: The primary location for this position is Redmond, WA. Additionally, there are three other locations where this role may be based. Candidates who do not reside in one of these four areas will be relocated to Redmond.

This role is flexible in that you can work up to 50% from home.

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or Certificate in Design, Fine Arts, Human Computer Interaction, Visual Communications or related art field AND 2+ years experience in art design or a related art field working on computer games or entertainment OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in motion design, animation, or visual storytelling.
  • 2+ years of experience in motion design tools such as After Effects, Figma, Lottie, Principle, or similar.
  • A portfolio showcasing expressive motion work across brand, campaign, and social formats.
Additional or preferred qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree or Certificate in Design, Fine Arts, Human Computer Interaction, Visual Communications or related art field AND 8+ years experience art design or a related art field working on computer games or entertainment OR equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years experience using related software and packages (e.g., Maya, 3DS Max, Photoshop/Adobe suite, Mental Ray, Substance Designer/Painter/Zbrush, SideFX Houdini, After Effects, Unity, Softimage). experience shipping 2+ multiple projects or products end to end.
  • 4+ years experience working in brand-focused environments or with creative campaigns.
  • 2+ years experience with AI tools for animation, prototyping, or asset generation—or a strong desire to learn and apply them.
  • 4+ years experience working collaboratively in a fast-paced, matrixed organization.
Art IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Create high-quality motion design and animation assets for brand campaigns, social content, and experiential activations.
  • Translate creative concepts into expressive motion narratives that reinforce brand identity and storytelling goals.
  • Collaborate with Creative Directors, ACDs, and cross-functional teams to ensure motion aligns with campaign strategy and visual direction.
  • Contribute to motion libraries and toolkits that support consistency and reuse across teams. Maintain a high bar for craft, quality, and attention to detail across all deliverables.
  • Stay current with trends in animation, design, and technology to bring fresh thinking to the team.
