Overview

With the continued growth of cloud computing and the goal of delivering a platform that customers trust and enjoy, the Azure Core Insights team is focused on strengthening service availability and reliability. We are hiring an experienced Principal Data Scientist Manager to join our agile and diverse team. This role involves applying data science and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques to build tools that monitor service quality and generate insights to help mitigate customer-impacting issues.
As a Principal Data Scientist Manager, you will lead efforts to develop intelligent systems that detect anomalies, predict potential disruptions, and provide actionable diagnostics. You will collaborate across engineering and product teams to ensure our solutions are scalable, secure, and aligned with customer needs. Your work will directly contribute to improving the resilience of Microsoft Azure services and enhancing the customer experience.

Qualifications

Required Qualitifications:

  • Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)
    • OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 7+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results.
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 10+ years data science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results.
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 5+ years of Data Science product building, project-delivery experience, professional services, and/or consulting experience.
  • 3 years of experience in building, mentoring and growing a team of Data Scientists.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in managing a team of Data Scientists either as a manager or an acting manager
  • Experience in running livesite services and ability to learn the platform and debug.
  • Track record in driving telemetry requirements and implementation in the platform.
  • Dedicated to a continuous feedback loop to improve the platform quality.

Data Science M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • You will oversee data acquisition and ensure data is properly formatted and described. You’ll also coach engineers in data cleaning and analysis best practices, identify gaps in current data sets, and drive ethics and privacy discussions around data collection and preparation.
  • You will evaluate your team’s models and recommend improvements as necessary, drive best practices for models, and develop operational models that run at scale. You’ll also conduct thorough reviews of data analysis and modeling techniques, and identify and invent new evaluation methods.
  • You will research and maintain a deep knowledge of the industry, including trends and technologies, so that you can identify strategy opportunities and contribute to thought leadership best practices. You’ll also write extensible code that spans multiple features, and develop expertise in proper debugging techniques.
  • You will define business, customer, and solution strategy goals, and partner with other teams to identify and explore new opportunities. You’ll also commit to a customer-oriented focus by acknowledging their needs, and offer customer pragmatic solutions that align with their data capabilities.
  • You will produce both data and AI products that scale, efficiently manage big data, build fast corelations, generate root causes, and measure precision and recall.
  • You will work with platform developers and program managers to drive up the service quality and customer experience.
  • You will participate and contribute to resolving any customer impacting issues in your areas of responsibility.
