Product teams within the Developer Division are focused on delivering CoreAI productivity features for developers who create and maintain apps for the desktop, mobile, cloud, or web. We work closely with GitHub to bring AI assistance wherever you are coding—writing, debugging, diagnosing, testing, committing, or reviewing. This position is for a Senior Software Engineer - CoreAI eager to work on developer scenarios and who is passionate about the opportunities AI models create and the development strategies that build products around them. The role requires creativity, tenacity, and critical thinking to work with these novel technologies. In this role, you will collaborate with IDE and coding language teams, data scientists, and internal and external LLM provider partners across the globe and time zones.

The role has two main focuses. First, building tools and systems to measure, evaluate, and compare advanced AI developer productivity features at scale. You will work closely with product teams to run experiments, evaluate, iterate, and improve developer products. Second, supporting forward-looking exploration with rapid prototyping, development, and delivery of cutting-edge developer tools.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ year of experience with AI LLM models, such as OpenAI, Azure AI, ML

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

  • 2+ years of experience with AI LLM models, such as OpenAI, Azure AI, ML
  • Ability to excel in a research-driven, experimental environment by embracing iterative development and shipping
  • Proficiency in at least one modern programming language such as TypeScript, Python, C#, Java
  • Experience working with or delivering AI-assisted developer tools
  • Relevant experience running a 24/7 Azure based services
  • Detailed knowledge of object-oriented design and programming, Test Driven Development approaches, and distributed cloud architectures
  • Growth mindset with a desire to continually learn and apply new skills to a broad range of projects as you dig into complex problems and create solutions that scale to a large system and codebase
  • Possess interpersonal skills necessary to articulate design choices and the importance of our security deliverables
  • Experience working with experimentation systems, telemetry systems and data to drive engineering and product decision making
  • Customer focus and a deep commitment to delivering products that create customer value and delightful experiences

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a feature.
  • Supports identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product feature with oversight.
  • With guidance, learns to create and implement code for a product, service, or feature reusing code as applicable.
  • Assists and learns about breaking down work items into tasks and provides estimation.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) in monitoring system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions for simple problems, and recommends actions to restore system/product/service by following the playbook.
  • Reviews current developments and proactively seeks new knowledge that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
