Overview

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the CHSE (Cloud Hardware Systems Engineering) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

We are looking for a Hardware Engineering Director, AC/DC Power to join the System Design team.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 8+ years of experience in power system design and validation, including team leadership.
  • 8+ years of experience in active PFC, and isolated DCDC converter (PWM or resonant).
  • 2+ years experience in power system stability design and qualification.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in high power rack and CSP environments.
  • Experience in BBU (battery backup unit) and BMS design.
  • Knowledge and experience in super-capacitor in AI pulse load application.
  • Familiarity with hyperscale data center infrastructure and AI workloads.
  • Design and experience in DCDC power delivery solutions in compute servers.
  • Knowledge of firmware interfaces and digital bus communication protocols (PMBus, Modbus, or CANBus, etc.).
  • Contributions to industry standards or open-source power engineering initiatives.
  • Exposure to reliability testing, failure analysis, and quality control systems.
  • Deep expertise in power conversion, AC/DC PFC, and system stability.
  • Experience with simulation tools (e.g., LTspice, Simplis) and lab instrumentation.
  • Proven track record of managing projects teams (internal/external ODM suppliers).
  • Proven communication, strategic planning, and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of the UL/IEC safety and regulatory certification requirement.
  • Proven experience in leading cross-functional teams, driving strategic initiatives, and mentoring team members to achieve performance goals.

Hardware Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the AC/DC power engineering team across US and Taiwan, ensuring alignment with SCHIE’s strategic goals.
  • Define and enforce technical standards, specifications, and best practices for power delivery and system stability.
  • Oversee the design and validation of rack-level and Shelf-level AC/DC power systems.
  • Lead supplier engagement and ODM collaboration for power components and systems.
  • Drive root cause analysis and resolution of complex power-related issues in production and development environments.
  • Collaborate with silicon, firmware, mechanical, and systems teams to ensure seamless integration.
  • Represent AHSI in cross-org forums and industry partnerships, influencing power strategy and standards.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to hiring, onboarding, and career development.
