Overview
As a Critical Environment Facility Technician (CET) in Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) team, you will maintain the critical infrastructure that keeps our Datacenters up and running. This could be anything from coordinating with supplier/vendors, ensuring a safe work environment, having a hands-on understanding of how critical equipment works, performing various types of maintenance and repairs, responding to onsite incidents, monitor equipment performance and operations.
Microsoft’s Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers our cloud services. As a CO+I Critical Environment Technician, you will perform a key role in delivering the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform. Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent AND mission critical services work/applied learning experience (e.g., high availability assembly/manufacturing/critical infrastructure environments such as data centers, oil and gas refineries, hospitals, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, or related fields)
- OR equivalent experience.
- Ability to work shifts, including shift assignments during non-standard business hours that may include evening, nighttime, weekends, and/or holidays
While not required, we also look for the following Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in facility maintenance, building operations, or handyman services.
- Familiarity with CMMS platforms and work order management.
- Basic knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general building infrastructure.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
- Good communication and documentation skills.
- Understanding of safety protocols and emergency procedures.
- Comfortable using digital tools for reporting and scheduling.
Background Check Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Responsibilities
The Critical Environment Facility Technician is responsible for maintaining and servicing non-critical infrastructure across administrative buildings. This includes general building systems, office utilities, and support equipment not directly tied to data center uptime. The role blends technical facility management with hands-on maintenance and repair work, ensuring a safe, functional, and comfortable environment for employees and visitors.
Responsibilities:
- Perform routine inspections and repairs on lighting, plumbing, HVAC, and other non-critical systems.
- Use CMMS to receive, track, and close work orders related to administrative building maintenance. Ensure timely response to both urgent and non-urgent requests.
- Liaise with external service providers for specialized repairs or installations. Ensure work is completed to standard and documented appropriately.
- Assist in emergency situations such as fire alarm resets, generator checks, and coordination with public emergency services when required.
- Conduct scheduled checks on building systems to prevent breakdowns and ensure operational continuity. Maintain logs and update CMMS accordingly.
- Support minor renovation, waste and sustainability initiatives. Provide input on facility upgrades and layout changes.
- Understands, follows, and ensures safety and security requirements (e.g., job hazard assessments [JHAs], environmental health and safety (EH&S), toolbox talks), and business processes and procedures to properly perform work in a safe, quality, and reliable within Microsoft requirements.
