This position is based at the Redmond campus with 3 days work in the office and 2 days work from home. Relocation support is available.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 1+ year(s) technical experience in network design, development, and automation
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 2+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
- OR equivalent experience.
- Experienced managing enterprise grade optical transport systems and provisioning, troubleshooting, and maintaining long-haul and metro optical networks.
- Experienced with optical performance management tools, and optical transmission technologies including DWDM, CWDM, ROADM, and OTN.
- Experienced with fiber characterization technologies (OTDR, CD, PMD, etc).
- Experienced interpreting fiber plant documentation and optical schematics.
- Experienced with network design and capacity planning.
Additional Qualifications:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 3+ years experience managing enterprise grade networks
- Understanding of network routing protocols (ISIS, OSPF, BGP).
- Understanding of TCP/IP.
- Experienced with automation and scripting (Python, Ansible) for network provisioning and monitoring.
- Proficient in evaluating optical performance metrics including OSNR, BER, and Q-factor to ensure signal integrity across metro and long-haul DWDM deployments.
- Experience in simulating and planning high-capacity optical transport networks using professional-grade design tools
- Understanding of fiber types, key performance metrics, and deployment standards across OSP and transport environments
Cloud Network Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

Responsibilities
As a Senior Cloud Network Engineer, you will be at the heart of Microsoft’s modern network engineering process, working in a team that manages Microsoft’s enterprise global network routing and optical infrastructure. We are focused on solving the most interesting challenges of developing innovative solutions while ensuring service reliability through identifying and eradicating defects within the infrastructure. Primary Responsibilities:
Network Design and Implementation
- You will apply Knowledge of Networks, Industry Trends, and Field Data towards implementation and operations.
- Datacenter or Network Site Development – You will create bill of materials and translate high-level design into low-level design and collaboration.
- Design Reviews and Quality Assurance – You will participate or contribute to network design or code reviews.
- Secure by design philosophy to ensure design meets best practice security standards.
Maintain and Operate Networks
- You will monitor, analyze, and troubleshoot network infrastructure; participate in on-call/Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) duties and create root cause analysis for network incidents.
- Continuous Improvement, testing and validation of network and optical devices.
- Deployment Management - Work within a team of engineers to manage network deployments.
- You will troubleshoot enterprise grade routing networks and relevant protocols.

Supporting People and Execution
- Collaboration - You will collaborate within and across teams by proactively sharing information with an appropriate level of detail for their audience; overcome obstacles by resolving conflicts and issues across interdependent teams and engage with partners and stakeholders so issues can be resolved, and mutual objectives are met.
- Mentorship / Development - You will mentor and provide feedback to other engineers, while also proactively seeking mentorship and feedback from others; share ideas and insights for improving team-oriented behaviors, including DevOps and live site handling skills.
