Overview
Microsoft Research in Redmond is looking for an Applied Scientist with a passion for research and innovation. In this role, you will explore new ideas with potential for impact, contribute to rapid prototyping of experimental technologies, and help evolve successful prototypes into customer-facing systems.
This role is well-suited for individuals who are early in their careers or new to the applied scientist path, and who are eager to work at the intersection of research and applied development. You will focus on building and operating systems end-to-end — from early experiments to real-world deployments with customers — while iterating quickly to assess feasibility, scalability, and product-market fit.
You’ll thrive in a fast-paced collaborative environment that values creativity, curiosity, and fast iteration, while working closely with researchers, engineers, and product managers to accelerate the path from research to impact.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field OR equivalent experience.
- Experience building software projects (e.g., in Python, C++, or similar).
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research) OR equivalent experience.
- 1+ year(s) experience creating publications (e.g., patents, peer-reviewed academic papers).
- Experience applying Artificial Intelligence to productivity tools.
Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.

Responsibilities
- Partner with researchers, engineers, and product teams to explore and test new opportunities.
- Design, prototype, and refine experimental services and applied research systems. Help transition promising prototypes into reliable, production-quality systems.
- Operate and evaluate systems with early users, incorporating feedback to drive improvements.
