Overview

The Microsoft Cloud Operations + Innovation (CO+I) Commissioning team is responsible for managing the end-to-end delivery of new data center capacity for CO+I. Through development of leading program management and construction processes, this team is chartered with managing workflow across vertically and horizontally aligned project managers and virtual teams to successfully deliver multi-million dollar, multi-year data center construction programs.

As a Commissioning Manager, you will work with the commissioning team, data center architects, engineers, construction managers, network engineers, data center operations teams and finance teams to streamline and improve delivery of data center capacity. You will execute against scope, schedule, and budget to deliver the latest generation of datacenter technology to Microsoft’s Online Services. You will be support for ensuring projects are commissioned in accordance with Microsoft's standards: supporting projects in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin (north of Chicago, south of Milwaukee), as well as supporting program-specific commissioning work in other Regions.

This position is for individuals entering the field or specialty of Commissioning (Cx). It serves as a support role to the commissioning leads, with potential for growth into a lead position.

This position is located in Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin. Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidate will need to relocate and work 100% onsite.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years Commissioning Management or relevant technical engineering experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years Commissioning Management or relevant technical engineering experience
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in datacenter facilities (maintenance, operations, construction, commissioning)
  • 3+ years of construction experience with new build/greenfield projects
  • 3+ years of experience with electrical and mechanical test equipment

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
    • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • Prior experience with construction QA/QC, and project management
  • Knowledge in datacenter commissioning, as well as datacenter operations and maintenance
  • Understanding of Uninterruptible Power Systems (UPS) systems, switchgears, generators, and critical mechanical systems
  • Prior experience writing detailed Commissioning Scripts
  • Experience with issue identification and resolution management
  • Hold a commissioning certification, OSHA 10 (Occupational Safety and Health) certification or higher
  • Experience complying with NFPA-70E (National Fire Protection Association)
  • Hold a Project Management Professional (PMP) certification
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), MS Visio, MS Project

Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Business Processes
    • Reports to the CO+I Director of Commissioning – AI
    • Function as the primary on-site Commissioning Manager for your special commissioning projects, with secondary responsibilities including remote support of other similar commissioning projects across the Americas (AMERs).
    • Create and maintain best practices to identify and incorporate quality and cost-effective solutions.
    • Manage contracted Commissioning Agents assigned to datacenter construction projects in your region.
    • Develop commissioning procedures and standards.
    • Drive commissioning processes, scope, and schedule.
    • Minimal travel. Expected to be on one main site most of the time, with some work from home flexibility.
  • Communications
    • Conduct construction site inspections to review Quality Assurance (QA)/Quality Controls (QC), commissioning process, issues, and Key Performance Indicator (KPI) metrics to report to management.
    • Manage client representatives and partners to align scope, schedule, and budget, as well as coordinate meetings and activities of vendor Project Managers.
    • Attend scheduled owner/architect/contractor (OAC) project meetings, and report findings to management, as necessary.
    • Provide reporting on project progress including scope, schedule, and budget weekly or as required.
  • Accountability
    • Responsible for developing, managing, and reporting on scope, schedule of the Commissioning Process for CO+I Projects.
    • Manage the Commissioning process for your projects.
    • Reporting of the Commissioning process to management on a regular basis.
    • Work independently in support of the CO+I Program.
  • Strategy and Development
    • Manage data center commissioning project delivery strategy in alignment with the CO+I road map strategy.
    • Refine practices/policies and develops methods/techniques for driving solutions including development of commissioning procedures.
    • Provide input to long-term delivery strategy and incorporates requirements into the project execution plans.
  • Vendor Management and contract compliance
    • Provide Vendor oversight and performance management (Scorecard driven).
    • Preparation of RFP's, PER's, and other project approval tools & templates.
