We are hiring experienced engineers to tackle some of the most complex and fascinating challenges in distributed systems.
As the core of the Azure cloud, the Azure Compute platform is a fault-tolerant distributed system built on commodity datacenter hardware. The Holmes team, a key part of this platform, delivers dynamic resource management capabilities that enhance customer availability and platform efficiency. Our services drive innovations such as placement reshaping, defragmentation, overbooking, and transparent maintenance—integrated through intelligent algorithms for optimal performance.
As a Software Engineer II in this role, you will design and build highly available, event-driven microservices that elevate customer experience. You will collaborate with Microsoft Research to integrate cutting-edge machine learning and artificial intelligence (ML/AI) models, contributing to the evolution of a platform that powers mission-critical workloads at a global scale.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical field AND technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Proficiency with distributed systems.
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field.

Responsibilities
- Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a feature.
- Supports identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product feature with oversight.
- With guidance, learns to create and implement code for a product, service, or feature reusing code as applicable.
- Assists and learns about breaking down work items into tasks and provides estimation.
- Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) in monitoring system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions for simple problems, and recommends actions to restore system/product/service by following the playbook.
- Reviews current developments and proactively seek new knowledge that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
