Overview
We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer to lead the development of scalable data analytics platforms and AI-driven solutions for user behavior and operational analytics in Microsoft Teams. Our systems process petabytes of data daily, capturing millions of events per minute. We own the big data pipelines and intelligent analytics platform that powers insights and operational health across all of Teams. Our mission is to empower feature teams to understand their customers, drive operational excellence, and deliver impactful user experiences.
We’re a savvy group of generalizing specialists who combine deep engineering expertise with modern tools, frameworks, and methodologies to build robust platforms. We take pride in delivering an end-to-end events data platform that emits, collects, enriches, and analyzes over 100 billion events per day.
In addition to driving near real-time analytics and business KPIs, our team is also responsible for building and managing the operational tooling for Microsoft Teams, ensuring fast incident detection, diagnosis, and resolution. We are now expanding our charter to build AI agents that streamline and automate operational processes, reduce mean time to resolution (MTTR), and elevate the overall reliability of the Teams service.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- Strong proficiency in programming languages such as C#, Java, Python, or Scala.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
- OR equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience building large-scale distributed systems or data platforms.
- Experience with big data technologies like Spark, Kafka, Azure Data Explorer (Kusto), or equivalent.
- Deep understanding of telemetry systems, monitoring, and observability best practices.
- Proven ability to drive cross-team collaboration and influence technical direction.
- Experience designing or building AI agents or agentic workflows to automate operational or analytical tasks.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP.
- Strong problem-solving and debugging skills in large-scale, production environments.
- Familiarity with data governance, privacy, and security best practices.
- Data driven, customer focused and organized.
- Self-motivated with a strong drive for reaching across teams and organizations to make progress collaboratively.
- Experience working with databases and writing efficient SQL queries to manage, transform, and analyze large datasets.
Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $158,400 - $258,000 per year.

Responsibilities
- Design, develop and maintain data analytics platform components that power the Telemetry systems for Microsoft with an AI-first mindset on analytics tooling.
- Build intelligent automation and agent-based solutions to streamline operations and improve system reliability.
- Own the architecture and operationalization of big data pipelines and real-time telemetry services.
- Collaborate closely with product teams to deliver tools and insights that drive customer and service health.
- Deliver high-quality, reliable systems with strong monitoring, alerting, and observability practices.
