The Microsoft Red Team attacks ALL Microsoft services, continually – identifying critical, systemic risks, demonstrating authentic attack chains and techniques, and working with engineering teams, investigators, and incident responders to continuously improve their ability to protect, detect, investigate, and respond to real attacks.

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager- Red Team Tooling, interested in leading some of the most experienced Red Team malware developers in the industry. This group is responsible for delivering critical Red Team capabilities and tools and ensuring that our partner Red Team operators have what they need to achieve their goals.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ year of people management experience leading engineering teams
  • 1+ year of experience in Red Teaming, malware development or offensive cyber operations

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 10+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Previous experience conducting or supporting red teaming, penetrating testing, or offensive security capabilities
  • 3+ years of people management experience leading engineering teams
  • 3+ years of experience in Red Teaming, malware development or offensive cyber operations

Software Engineering M5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $139,900 - $274,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $188,000 - $304,200 per year.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead a team of developers, applying Microsoft’s management values of Coach, Model, and Care in defining business critical outcomes, defining a plan of action for your team, and supporting your team in achieving those outcomes
  • Provide technical leadership through your own engineering contributions, code reviews, design reviews, feedback on product strategy, and prioritization of capabilities
  • Learn the needs and business of the Microsoft Red Team, and how the broader Microsoft security organization relies on this specialized role
  • Support the development of your team, ensuring their positive skills and career growth, engagement, and overall team effectiveness
  • Set and maintaining the team culture of reliable, sustainable, high-quality delivery
  • Ensure Microsoft continues to improve security through authentic red team attacks
