The Microsoft Insider Risk Program is dedicated to safeguarding our people, data, and intellectual property from internal threats that could compromise the security and integrity of the company. As Security Engineer with deep technical expertise in cybersecurity and insider risk, you will drive advanced detection, forensic analysis, and response across diverse environments—ranging from on-premises infrastructure to cloud-based services. In this role, you will combine in-depth technical investigations with cross-functional collaboration to uncover and neutralize insider threats. Your ability to probe deeply into security incidents and craft forward-thinking detection strategies will help safeguard Microsoft’s most critical assets and maintain a resilient security posture against internal adversaries.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in software development lifecycle, large-scale computing, modeling, cyber security, anomaly detection, Security Operations Center (SOC) detection, threat analytics, security incident and event management (SIEM), information technology (IT), and operations incident response.
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in software development lifecycle, large-scale computing, modeling, cyber security, and anomaly detection.
    • OR Master's Degree or Doctorate in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field.
  • CISSP, CISA, CISM, SANS, GCIA, GCIH, OSCP, and/or Security+ certification.
  • Ability to write complex queries and parse large datasets.

Security Operations Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $100,600 - $199,000 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $131,400 - $215,400 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Continuously assess security alerts generated by insider threat detection systems in various environments (on-prem, cloud, endpoints, and more).
  • Design and implement detection rules, scripts, and algorithms that identify anomalous user behaviors indicative of insider threats.
  • Analyze system logs, network traffic, authentication records, and application data to identify and assess potential security threats.
  • Use advanced correlation techniques to link suspicious activities across multiple data sources, building comprehensive narratives around insider threat scenarios.
  • Serve as a technical lead during insider threat incidents, coordinating containment and remediation efforts with Legal (CELA), HR, and other security teams.
  • Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) and playbooks that streamline alert triage, investigation, and escalation processes.
