Overview
Microsoft’s Applied Sciences Group is seeking a Systems Engineer to help design and test the next generation of input device technologies. In this role, you will join a cutting-edge R&D group (part of the Applied Sciences hardware team) working on innovative concepts. If you are a hands-on engineer who loves building new hardware and solving complex hardware problems, we want to hear from you!
You will be responsible for end-to-end development of experimental hardware prototypes. This includes conceiving design solutions, building and assembling prototype devices, and rigorously testing their performance. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of electrical, firmware, and industrial design engineers to iterate on designs and achieve project goals. This is a full-time position with our engineering lab – an exciting opportunity to contribute to Microsoft’s device innovation pipeline.
Microsoft’s mission is to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As employees we come together with a growth mindset, innovate to empower others, and collaborate to realize our shared goals. Each day we build on our values of respect, integrity, and accountability to create a culture of inclusion where everyone can thrive at work and beyond.

Responsibilities
- Mechanical Design & Prototyping: Conceive and design mechanical components and mechanisms for new hardware prototypes. Create CAD models and drawings for parts such as frames, and enclosures. Build and assemble prototypes using in-house tools (3D printing, machining, etc.), iterating through multiple proof-of-concept (POC) versions. Lead fabrication processes to produce functional prototypes. Ensure that designs meet intended function and are feasible for eventual manufacturing.
- Simulation & Analysis: Perform engineering simulations (FEA) and analytical calculations to validate and refine designs. Use finite element analysis to predict stresses, deflections, and uniformity of mechanical parts under load. Analyze results to identify improvements (e.g. adjusting geometry or material for better performance). Continuously refine the mechanical models based on simulation insights and real-world test data.
- Testing & Validation: Plan and execute hands-on laboratory tests to evaluate prototype performance and reliability. Develop test setups (such as custom rigs and measurement fixtures) to measure forces and displacements. Conduct experiments to collect data on key metrics. Work with team members to troubleshoot issues; adjust assembly processes and component designs to address any performance gaps. Ensure each iteration undergoes thorough testing, and document the results (photos, data, observations) for review.
- Project Coordination & Collaboration: Collaborate closely with cross-functional team members throughout the prototyping process. Coordinate with electrical and software engineers to integrate sensors or actuators needed for the prototypes. Schedule and lead regular project meetings to align progress and resolve blocking issues. Engage with external suppliers or fabrication partners as needed to source custom prototype parts. Foster a team culture of open communication, creativity, and rapid iteration.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed technical documentation for all projects. This includes design notes, simulation reports, test plans, and results summaries. Prepare clear, concise updates on prototype outcomes and present findings to the broader group. Ensure knowledge is captured for future reference and to support potential product transition. You will also assist in writing external-facing documentation if needed (e.g. handoff documents for partner teams or manufacturing vendors).
