Overview
The Azure WAN (Wide Area Network) Team is growing and we’re looking for a creative and detail-oriented engineer who can combine networking experience with software development fundamentals. We seek engineers who share our passion and can approach problems from a customer’s perspective, creating user experiences that genuinely enable and empower our partners.
Focusing on the global backbone network and collaborating closely with partner teams in Azure Networking, you’ll play a crucial role in designing, developing, and building networking and automation components for the Wide Area Network. You will contribute to the end-to-end lifecycle of automation components — from initial test design and development through deployment and operational integration within lab and production environments. Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- 7+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or related field AND 4+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation.
- OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
- OR Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
Other Requirements:
- Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications:
- 11+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
- OR Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 8+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
- OR Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 6+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation
- OR Doctorate Degree in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field AND 3+ years technical experience in network design, development, and automation.
- 1+ year(s) experience delivering network designs into production and experience with live site accountability for a network.
- Cisco Certified Network Associate (CNA)/Juniper Network Certified Internetwork Associate (JNCIA) certifications highly desired.
- 5+ years of professional software development experience in the networking domain, including Python, YAML, and workflow systems.
- Experience with automation tools like Ansible, Jenkins and Docker
- 2+ years of experience with Network Testing and Network Test automation.
- Network engineering experience in a cloud provider, internet service provider or large enterprise environment.
- Experience with routing protocols such as BGP (Border Gateway Protocol), and MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching), ISIS (Intermediate System to Intermediate System) and Segment Routing.
Cloud Network Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.

Responsibilities
- Develops and maintains automated test frameworks using Python and Ansible to validate network features, protocols, and platform stability; implements OS upgrade automation integrated with Jenkins-based Continuous Integration (CI)/Continuous Delivery (CD) pipelines to streamline validation, reduce manual effort, and ensure consistency across multi-vendor environments (e.g., Cisco, Juniper, Arista).
- Collaborates with engineering and programming teams to define and implement onboarding and validation processes for network operating systems; ensures thorough testing and integration aligned with customer use cases, technical requirements, and architectural standards.
- Leads design, network/code and security reviews across teams to identify risks and prevent classes of bugs prior to production release by applying expertise in network implementation, available technologies, analysis of telemetry pipelines, and root cause analysis.
- Triages, troubleshoots, and repairs complex live site issues by applying expertise in physical network components and features (e.g., device operating systems), problem management tools (e.g., root cause analysis, trend analysis, postmortems, repair items), and/or low-level Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).
- Demonstrates knowledge of data — knows what data is needed, how to find new or missing data and how to describe the impact of defects on customers or the impact of operations-focused scenarios on networks or infrastructure, as well as the relevance to product and service targets; identifies patterns and trends in data and interprets them to inform decisions related to improving and optimizing products and/or services.
- Collaborates within and across teams by proactively sharing information with an appropriate level of detail for their audience; overcomes obstacles by resolving conflicts and issues across interdependent teams and engages partners and stakeholders so issues can be resolved, and mutual objectives are met.
