The Microsoft Insider Risk Program is dedicated to safeguarding our people, data, and intellectual property from internal threats that could compromise the security and integrity of the company. Built on a foundation of innovation and collaboration, the program combines proactive detection, advanced data analytics, and effective response mechanisms to identify and mitigate insider risks. As a Security Engineer for an Insider Risk Program, you will monitor and triage alerts related to insider threats—ranging from policy violations to potential malicious activity. You will support the investigation and remediation processes with our partner teams across Microsoft. The successful candidate will thrive in a dynamic and global team environment, demonstrate sound and consistent judgement, and can work independently. Having strong attention to detail, excellent communication and organization skills will be essential to success in this role.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in software development lifecycle, large-scale computing, modeling, cyber security, anomaly detection, Security Operations Center (SOC) detection, threat analytics, security incident and event management (SIEM), information technology (IT), and operations incident response.

    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science or related field.

  • Experience with data query language such as SQL, KQL.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
  • This position requires verification of citizenship due to citizenship-based legal restrictions. Specifically, this position supports United States federal, state, and/or local government agency customers and is subject to certain citizenship-based restrictions where required or permitted by applicable law. To meet this legal requirement, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate’s citizenship will be verified with a valid passport.
  • Controlled Technology: This role will require access to information that is controlled for export under export control regulations, potentially under the U.S. International Traffic in Arms Regulations or Export Administration Regulations, the EU Dual Use Regulation, and/or other export control regulations. As a condition of employment, the successful candidate will be required to provide proof of citizenship, U.S. permanent residency, or other protected status (e.g., under 8 U.S.C. § 1324b(a)(3)) for assessment of eligibility to access the export-controlled information. To meet this legal requirement, and as a condition of employment, the successful candidate’s citizenship will be verified with a valid passport. Lawful permanent residents, refugees, and asylees may verify status using other documents, where applicable.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of insider threat concepts and the unique challenges they pose.
  • Experience using SIEM tools, ticketing systems, or scripting for log analysis.
  • Previous experience in insider risk or cybersecurity within a large, complex organization.
  • Ability to react with appropriate urgency to situations and requests.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, tact, diplomacy, integrity and professionalism in all communications.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Security Operations Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Respond to detections and escalations related to Insider Threat.
  • Identify, collect, and analyze essential data from variety of sources to validate suspicious behaviors.
  • Coordinate the investigation and mitigation steps with other internal teams within Microsoft globally.
  • Develop playbooks to improve processes and information sharing across teams.
  • Work closely with engineering and first party product teams to author new detections, or tune existing detections to improve quality of alerts.
  • Provide investigation support, including containment and remediation during insider threat incidents.
  • Ensure metrics are complete and accurate and findings are documented in case management system.
