Overview

We are looking for a Senior Applied Scientist to join Microsoft Security Research! We’re the research organization behind Microsoft’s industry-leading security products. Our job is to win the cyber battle through AI innovation & production-scale delivery!

You’ll be joining an accomplished team of scientists focused on Microsoft Defender XDR and Microsoft Copilot for Security. You’ll be experimenting to find new ways to meet critical security needs – from detecting attacks, to disrupting attacks, to coalescing incidents across products, to guiding SOCs to remediate, and more. You’ll be productizing your innovations on large, distributed delivery platforms. You’ll also be driving community by sharing your accomplishments across Microsoft and the broader Security and AI world.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience formulating, developing, and evaluating machine learning models and AI based systems.
  • 2+ years of experience performing research and development in cloud-based compute environments over large distributed datasets.
  • 2+ years of experience working within a modern code repository.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers).
  • 3+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).
  • 1+ year(s) experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.
  • 1+ year(s) experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.
  • Experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker.

Applied Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.

Responsibilities

  • The main responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Work across product & research teams to identify opportunities for new security capabilities that keep us at the forefront of industry.
  • Collaborate across discipline to drive innovative AI-fueled solutions from start to finish – ideation, experimentation, sharing, shipping, and durable customer impact.
  • Work with distributed compute to leverage large data from several security domains such as email, identity, endpoint, and cloud.
  • Exhibit thought leadership to partners & industry through technical engagement (e.g., experimental readouts, code sharing, external publication, and/or patents).
