Overview

The Surface Software Power and Performance Team is an integral part of Surface, providing the software necessary to deliver the most battery life and performance for our customers. The team is hiring a Software Engineer II to join our Performance Engineering group to work at a system level to manage and optimize the intersection of software, electrical, mechanical, and thermals across the surface portfolio.


As a Software Engineer II, you will work on the Security Development Lifecycle (SDL), security assessments, and vulnerability management ensuring compliance with privacy regulations. You will get to learn about the newest security guidelines and how to apply them in your everyday work in order to keep new and existing systems compliant with ever-changing privacy regulations. As a Software Engineer II, you will architect and implement solutions individually as well as within a team. You will have the opportunity to guide others in the implementation of solutions and to interact with people across the company and outside the company in various roles, ensuring that solutions meet the needs of various stakeholders.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of experience in optimizing silicon performance.
  • 2+ years of experience in consumer electronics thermal mitigation.
  • Experience in embedded firmware.

Other Requirements
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience in Automated System Testing.
  • Experience in Control Systems.

Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.

Responsibilities

  • Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a set of features.
  • Contributes to the identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product area with little oversight.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) working on-call to monitor system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions and gains approval to restore system/product/service for simple problems.
  • Remains current in skills by investing time and effort into staying abreast of current developments that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
  • Drives efforts to ensure the correct processes are followed to achieve a high degree of security, privacy, safety, and accessibility. Create and ensure the presence of visible evidence to demonstrate compliance for products.
