Overview

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.

The Senior Civil Engineer will serve as a Civil Engineering Subject Matter Expert (SME) for data center programming, design development, design, construction administration, renovations, retrofits, master planning, site due diligence, and operations-related technical design guidance and support. This position will provide civil engineering technical direction and oversight for AMERS-region data center designs and will engage with key Microsoft stakeholders, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), and external A/E consultant teams and general contractors that specialize in data center designs and builds to ensure that Microsoft’s data center civil engineering and site infrastructure design and quality standards are met.

This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.

Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates will need to relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years of technical Civil Engineering design experience.

    • OR Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical civil engineering design experience.

    • OR Master's degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience

    • OR Doctorate degree in Civil Engineering, or related field.

  • Professional Engineering License in Civil Engineering.

  • 5+ years’ experience participating on civil engineering design teams for large scale critical facilities and infrastructure development projects with multi-disciplinary teams of architects and engineers.

  • 5 + years' of experience in navigating in AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Revit, Sketchup, Bluebeam, BIM 360, and Autodesk Construction Cloud software for drawing review and development of conceptual level master plans during site selection and early design phases.

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of technical Civil Engineering design experience.

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical civil engineering design experience.

    • OR Master's degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years of technical engineering experience.

    • OR Doctorate degree in Civil Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • Experience working in mission critical and working knowledge on land acquisition, site master planning, permitting and development.

  • Provide civil engineering technical oversight for site selection and due diligence efforts with external and internal stakeholders.
  • Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical design approaches and decisions.

  • Ability to lead teams of engineers in advanced civil engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to large hyperscale data centers and campus environments.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

  • Ablity to travel domestically and internationally.

  • Spanish, Portuguese, or French language proficiency

Hardware Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will provide civil engineering technical direction, oversight, and design and construction review for new data center campus designs, builds, leases, retrofits, and renovations in addition to technical support for site selection, due diligence, master planning and permitting.

The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for the facilitation and delivery of Microsoft’s industry-leading data center designs including the development of innovative technology and advanced civil engineering and sustainable design concepts to be used as the basis for current and next generation data center designs, retrofits, and renovations. This role will provide technical direction, decision-making, and overall technical leadership for all civil engineering aspects of Microsoft’s data center portfolio.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with internal Microsoft and external stakeholders to provide civil engineering technical direction to deliver projects aligned with defined civil engineering, site and infrastructure design and performance criteria within scope, schedule, and budget.

  • Possess exceptional communication, organization, and leadership skills.

  • Expert civil engineering, site, utility and infrastructure design proficiency in commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on mission critical data center campus design.

  • Must be able to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament and a results-oriented collaborative manner.

  • Must be a person of integrity, be methodical and detailed-oriented with a strong work ethic.
