Microsoft’s Azure Data engineering team is leading the transformation of analytics in the world of data with products like databases, data integration, big data analytics, messaging & real-time analytics, and business intelligence. The products our portfolio include Microsoft Fabric, Azure SQL DB, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure PostgreSQL, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Grid, and Power BI. Within Azure Data, the databases team builds and maintains Microsoft's operational Database systems. We store and manage data in a structured way to enable multitude of applications across various industries. We are on a journey to enable developer friendly, mission-critical, AI enabled operational Databases across relational, non-relational and OSS offerings.

The Azure SQL team within Azure Data at Microsoft is responsible for a wide range of SQL services, including Azure SQL Database, SQL Managed Instance (SQL MI), SQL Virtual Machines (IaaS), on-premises SQL Server, and Arc-enabled SQL Server. Together, these services power many of the world’s mission-critical databases, trusted by most Fortune 1000 companies. A vital component of the database experience is the client SDKs we provide for developers, enabling seamless connections to the SQL family of databases across on-premises and cloud environments. These SDKs support various languages and frameworks, including Python, Java, C++, C#, and related object-relational mapping frameworks. Our team owns System.Data.SqlClient and Microsoft.Data.SqlClient SDKs across Windows, Linux, and macOS platforms.

We are seeking a skilled Principal Software Engineer with a passion for hands-on development to lead and innovate within our engineering team. Your primary mission in this role will be to enhance SQL Server Client drivers by improving their performance, reliability, maintainability, and usability. Additionally, you'll focus on integrating these drivers more effectively with various language-specific data frameworks. This role requires collaboration within and across teams to foster a culture of innovation in data API development and to streamline the integration of Azure SQL databases into the latest web, mobile, and microservice architectures.

Responsibilities

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will serve as a technical leader, guiding the team through complex challenges with your deep expertise. Your role will be pivotal in mentoring and developing new leaders within the team, sharing your knowledge to elevate the skills and capabilities of others.

Technical Leadership: Acts as a technical lead for high-impact projects, ensuring timely delivery with an emphasis on quality. While not directly managing a team, collaborates closely with engineers to guide project direction and execution, aligning technical and business objectives seamlessly.

Technical Guidance: Provides deep technical expertise in areas such as architecture, design, code reviews, development, quality assurance, and live site management. This role is crucial in maintaining the technical excellence of the team's output, significantly contributing to the success of projects.

Collaboration and Coordination: Works closely with Program and Product Managers to identify and prioritize the most critical, urgent, or impactful areas. Facilitates clear project scopes and ensures the efficient division of responsibilities among teams, maximizing project efficiency and aligning with the business’s sprint rhythm.

Mentorship and Best Practices: Embodies and promotes Microsoft's values through mentorship and collaboration, serving as a role model for engineers. Demonstrates best practices in task grooming and project backlog management, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation among peers.

Cross-Team Collaboration: Engages in partnerships with peer teams in similar technical domains to enhance cross-team collaboration and leverage shared knowledge and experiences. Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, or related technical discipline AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience as a Technical Lead, demonstrating leadership in guiding teams through complex projects.
  • 6+ years of experience in designing, building, and shipping large-scale cloud services, with a proven track record of delivering high-quality solutions.

Microsoft Cloud Background Check

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications

  • SDK Development Experience: Extensive experience in developing and maintaining client-facing SDKs, with a focus on usability, performance, and integration.
  • .NET Programming Proficiency: Proficiency in .NET development, essential for building and supporting SDKs and related applications.
  • Release Management: Proficient experience in managing the release processes of SDKs, ensuring smooth deployment and versioning.

Software Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $135,800 - CAD $253,000 per year.
