As a Software Engineer II (Backend), you will be developing mostly backend code and be a key player across all areas of the engineering lifecycle, including eliciting requirements from customers, defining the feature in partnership with UX designers and Product Owners, building the experience by writing the code, testing it and shipping it with quality and on time, and sustaining it through its maturity. You will learn about new technologies, challenges and opportunities in the Ed Tech sector, and become an even better collaborator and communicator. We also expect you to share their ideas, ask a lot of questions, show a desire to make our team better, and learn and adapt quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Works with appropriate stakeholders to determine user requirements for a set of features.
  • Contributes to the identification of dependencies, and the development of design documents for a product area with little oversight.
  • Creates and implements code for a product, service, or feature, reusing code as applicable.
  • Contributes to efforts to break down larger work items into smaller work items and provides estimation.
  • Acts as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) working on-call to monitor system/product feature/service for degradation, downtime, or interruptions and gains approval to restore system/product/service for simple problems.
  • Remains current in skills by investing time and effort into staying abreast of current developments that will improve the availability, reliability, efficiency, observability, and performance of products while also driving consistency in monitoring and operations at scale.
  • Leverages the work of others, including the work of peers, of internal Microsoft solutions, and of open-source and industry solutions, to avoid reinventing the wheel.
  • Designs cloud solutions using microservice architecture and other techniques. Packages up solutions to make them easy and attractive for other teams to follow.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
    • OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years of development experience in distributed systems.
Other Requirements

Candidates should be able to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements that are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science
    • OR related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript,OR Python
    • OR Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 2+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python
      • OR equivalent experience
  • Clear, concise, and effective verbal and written communicator with leadership drive.
  • Depth of knowledge and language experience in .NET C#.
  • Experience with cloud compute and cloud storage, preferably Azure.
  • Experience in service delivery technologies (ASP.NET WebAPI+MVC Razor, WCF) and industry standards (REST, OData, GraphQL, Json).
  • Scalable database background (SQL, Azure Table, Documents DB, etc).
  • Understanding of identity systems (oAuth2, etc).
Software Engineering IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across Canada is CAD $83,600 - CAD $159,600 per year.
