The Global Customer Success (GCS) organization, an organization within CE&S, is leading the effort to enable customer success on the Microsoft Cloud by harnessing leading, AI-powered capabilities and human expertise to deliver innovation solutions that accelerate business value, drive operational excellence and nurture long term loyalty.

As a Senior Director of Business Strategy, you will drive the most impactful needs of the organization to rapid completion resulting in greater success for our customers. To accomplish this, you are a customer facing resource that will determine and align the best practices to scale across the broader field organization. This role will engage at executive levels across multiple corporate functions but also engage directly with field leaders and customers to ensure the outputs are maximizing impact. You will take the largest problem statements and determine the most effective course of action across multiple time horizons and without organizational boundaries. Success will be tied to the key outcomes for the overall Modern Work business, including but not limited to financial performance, usage attainment and ensuring the delivery motions provide the scale and efficacy needed.

As a key member of both the MW CSU Business Strategy team and the extended LT for the MW CSU you will contribute to strategic decisions and actions that shape the future of the MW CSU.This person will need to have executive presence and will engage at C-levels across all functional areas driving the Modern Work business.

This role is flexible in that you can work up to 100% from home.

Responsibilities

Problem Solving & Insight

Synthesizes broad findings into insights across a division, including implications that inform business decisions on complex issues, leveraging executive presence to influence decisions and proactively driving solutions to high-impact strategic questions and unaddressed opportunities. Identifies and scopes expansive ideas for company strategy, often missed by others; leverages insights to develop recommendations and provide thought leadership (e.g., trend identification, implications of competitor moves) around potential future growth opportunities and strategic issues for Microsoft. Sells value of new efforts to business partners and/or executive leadership. Guides team through development of frameworks and methodologies to drive problem solving and insights.

Research, Analysis, & Framing

Guides others in conducting innovative research by leveraging and interpreting information (e.g., usage data, field feedback, customer feedback) around high-impact strategic questions, including researching within existing Modern Work Customer Success businesses; involves stakeholders as appropriate; leverages analyses of others to synthesize information and challenges research of others. Owns framing for broad research projects, ratifying with executives; assists less experienced colleagues with framing as needed. Take a programmatic approach to reporting, identifying, and developing the most critical motions and operating rhythms to drive desired behavior across key stakeholders with account teams, technical selling teams, and customer success across core and field.

Business Partner Relationships

Manages key points of contact with internal teams (e.g., Finance, Marketing, Engineering); manages and cultivates relationships with executive internal leaders (e.g., GM-level, CVP, CEO). Acts as an advisor to executive leadership as a domain expert within Strategy team and greater Microsoft, organizational context, and market awareness to guide less experienced colleagues and inform strategic business decisions. Demonstrates influences through partners across multiple divisions. Provides career mentorship to less experienced colleagues outside of Strategy function and is sought out by others for guidance and education. Identifies compelling projects and positions the team to carry them out. Engage directly with corporate and field leaders to identify and address initiatives with the highest impact and return.

Project Leadership

Manages multiple Strategy projects and teams across organizational boundaries as a project lead through goals, deliverables, feedback, resource balancing, and timing expectations; proactively identifies complex roadblocks and address them. Initiates and drives multiple projects and topic areas including project plans, recommendations, impact, and syndication across groups. Identifies, evaluates, and proposes new project work/deals based on unmet needs. Ensure programs and outputs are built for sustainability and scale. Identify opportunities and quick wins across various teams. Accelerate motions aligned to Microsoft Customer Engagement Methodology (MCEM) to ensure rapid expansion and adoption of emerging technologies.

Communication

Ensures communication of insights to business leaders (e.g., GM-level, CVP, EVP, CEO) and conveys viewpoints through written documents (e.g., memos, reports) and influence models (e.g., meetings, presentations) through minimal iterations of feedback and vetting; builds end-to-end storylines and creates outlines across multiples projects for less experienced colleagues to leverage. Influences decision making by providing communications, challenging ideas, and adapting messages to complex nuances as needed. Communicates value of new efforts to business partners and/or executive leadership. Engage directly with corporate and field leaders to identify and address initiatives with the highest impact and return.

Market Perspective

Develops and maintains an understanding of customers, competitors, partners, business models, market sizing, and industry trends; develops and maintains an understanding of the merger and acquisition (M&A), venture funding and public market environment and trends; leads market landscape analyses and reviews of companies of potential interest; provides guidance to business partners to inform decision-making; uses existing knowledge base to drive a deal thesis and business model; communicates deal thesis and business model.

Microsoft Portfolio Strategy and Prioritization

Develops an understanding of Microsoft’s product portfolio, strategic priorities, competitive position, gaps, and potential opportunities; drives evaluation of Microsoft strategic alternatives (e.g. buy, build, partner) and acquisition alternatives; ensures product roadmap, go-to-market, integration plans and related issues are considered; represents Corporate Strategy through exposure, presence, and influence of Microsoft stakeholders and leadership.

Qualifications

Required/minimum qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Business Administration or related field AND 6+ years marketing, strategy, business planning, consulting, banking, finance, economics, and/or partner organization experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Liberal Arts, Computer Science, or related field AND 8+ years marketing, strategy, business planning, consulting, banking, finance, economics, and/or partner organization experience OR equivalent experience.
  • 2+ years experience in Strategy, Management Consulting, and/or Finance.
  • 5+ years of experience in an operations or analytics role supporting a large global business or experience in driving a global business from a customer success or product perspective.
  • 4+ years of experience in Customer Success or Consulting in the enterprise segment, working directly with large customers and be familiar with field needs to successfully drive a new program.
Additional Or Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Business Administration or related field AND 12+ years marketing, strategy, business planning, consulting, banking, finance, economics, and/or partner organization experience
    • OR Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Liberal Arts, Computer Science, or related field AND 15+ years marketing, strategy, business planning, consulting, banking, finance, economics, and/or partner organization experience OR equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years experience in Strategy, Management Consulting, and/or Finance.
  • Deep experience on enabling consumption/usage and related processes, customer and partner requirements, and is deeply familiar with field roles and challenges.
  • Demonstrable thought leadership to create new initiatives and programs to achieve results.
  • Analytical skills, able to distill key insights from incomplete data.
Business Strategy IC6 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $154,500 - $273,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $199,600 - $299,400 per year.
