Overview

GitHub has a strong pedigree as a domain-specific social network aiming to connect communities through software collaboration. As with other social networks, GitHub is subject to users who aim to engage in bad behavior, resulting in complex user-facing issues with real-world implications. As a Trust & Safety Engineer, you will be at the forefront of protecting our community by building and maintaining infrastructure and tools to create a safe, inclusive, and productive environment for GitHub users. You will design, build, and maintain robust tooling solutions to detect and mitigate trust and safety issues, such as spam, malware, CSAM/TVEC, copyright infringement, and other abusive behaviors on the platform.

As time progresses we expect to explore more innovative and exhaustive approaches to identify, anticipate, and fight abuse on our platform.

About The Team

You will be working with a dedicated cross-functional team that includes Hubbers from GitHub’s Security & Legal organizations. This includes collaboration with the Platform Health team which combats abuse at scale, Threat Intelligence which identifies and analyzes threats, and GitHub Legal which owns the Terms of Service and serves as stakeholders in defining and enforcing Trust & Safety standards for the platform.

Responsibilities

  • Write and review front and back-end code to scale our abuse moderation operations.
  • Advocate for safety on GitHub. Work with Trust & Safety analyst partners to identify abuse and engineer detection or prevention strategies to mitigate harm.
  • Work with your team to define and prioritize novel solutions related to safety.
  • Provide thorough documentation for the systems you help build.
  • Encourage the technical growth of your peers.
  • Review new products and provide consultation to product teams.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • 2+ years experience in any of these technologies: Javascript, Typescript, React, GraphQL, Ruby, Rails, Java, Flink, Python, Go, C#.
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.

Preferred Experience

  • Interest in or experience fighting spam, malware, fraud, or attack activity at scale.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in stream processing and data pipelines.
  • Demonstrated experience bringing shape to ambiguous technical challenges.
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Passionate about solving customer problems, both internal and external.

Compensation Range

The base salary range for this job is USD $75,000.00 - USD $198,900.00 /Yr.

These pay ranges are intended to cover roles based across the United States. An individual's base pay depends on various factors including geographical location and review of experience, knowledge, skills, abilities of the applicant. At GitHub certain roles are eligible for benefits and additional rewards, including annual bonus and stock. These rewards are allocated based on individual impact in role. In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee's role.
