Microsoft Digital (MSD) powers, protects, and transforms the employee experience across devices, applications, and infrastructure while creating the blueprint that Microsoft customers and partners follow around the world.

Within Microsoft Digital, the Digital Asset Governance team is responsible for securing and governing Microsoft’s largest internal productivity ecosystem. We build intelligent governance solutions that help Microsoft manage, protect, and optimize millions of digital assets across SharePoint, Microsoft 365 Groups, Power Platform, Power BI, Loop, Teams Shared Channels, and emerging AI-powered experiences.

As a Senior Software Engineer, you will help define the future of digital asset governance at Microsoft. You will design and build cloud-scale services that enable security, compliance, lifecycle management, ownership accountability, and AI readiness across Microsoft's enterprise estate. Working at the intersection of distributed systems, security, data, governance, and AI, you will solve complex engineering challenges that directly support Microsoft's operational excellence goals and Secure Future Initiative (SFI), while influencing how Microsoft and ultimately our customers; govern and secure the next generation of intelligent workplace experiences.

Responsibilities
  • You will create, implement, optimize, debug, refactor, and maintain high-quality code with a focus on performance, reliability, security, maintainability, and operational excellence.
  • You will lead complex technical initiatives from concept through deployment, balancing customer needs, engineering quality, operational requirements, and security considerations.
  • You will identify dependencies, author technical design documentation, and develop execution plans that align teams around technical strategy, implementation, and delivery milestones.
  • You will leverage telemetry, analytics, and AI-driven insights to improve governance coverage, reduce operational risk, automate manual processes, and drive data-informed engineering decisions.
  • You will act as a technical leader within the team by mentoring engineers, conducting code reviews, leading design discussions, and promoting engineering best practices.
  • You will serve as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) for critical services, participating in on-call rotations, monitoring service health, resolving incidents, and driving long-term reliability improvements.
  • You will partner across Microsoft organizations to influence roadmaps, align technical strategies, and address complex cross-functional challenges involving security, compliance, governance, and cloud infrastructure.
  • You will drive continuous improvements in service availability, observability, efficiency, performance, and operational consistency through modernization and automation investments.
  • You will proactively evaluate emerging technologies, patterns, and industry trends, applying new approaches that improve engineering effectiveness and accelerate Microsoft's governance and AI transformation strategy.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of software architecture, API design, and service reliability practices.
  • Experience working with large-scale data platforms, telemetry, analytics, or automation systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive technical solutions across multiple teams and stakeholders.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Experience building governance, compliance, security, identity, or risk management solutions.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Teams, Power Platform, Power BI, Entra ID, or related services.
  • Experience with AI/ML, agentic workflows, or intelligent automation.
  • Experience developing enterprise SaaS platforms serving large-scale environments.
  • Familiarity with security and compliance frameworks, including risk management and control implementation.
  • Demonstrated history of mentoring engineers and providing technical leadership.

Software Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $119,800 - $234,700 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $160,200 - $261,000 per year.
